So Evanovich has spun Diesel into his own series, and happily it works very well (at least it did for me). As much as I love her Plum series, I've also enjoyed her "between the numbers" books featuring Diesel, a semi-supernatural figure who has strange powers. On the other, if she tries something different they complain because "it's just not the same". I'm always amused by some of the fans of Janet Evanovich - on one hand they complain that her Stephanie Plum series is getting stale. I read it in less than 24 kept me interested. This is an entertaining read, nothing deep. Shadow and Betrayal marks Daniel Abraham as one of today’s most brilliantly original young fantasy writers. One man, Otah Machi, stands at the crossroads of history in these imaginary world fantasies, the fulcrum around which the wheels of epic history rotate through achingly poignant cycles of life and death, love and betrayal. The industrialized Galt war machine is helpless against the powers of the andat…but political intrigue and deep treachery combine to shift the balance of power in a world of ancient empires and immortal magics. But the cities of the Khaiem resist Galt’s power with the andat-creatures of magic with godlike powers.Įach andat is brought into being by a “poet” who must say the right words and exert the iron will needed to control gods. In this omnibus edition of A Shadow in Summer and A Betrayal in Winter, the aggressively expansionist Galt empire has already conquered lands across a huge continent. A value-priced omnibus of the first two novels of Daniel Abraham’s classic Long Price Quartet-groundbreaking, unique fantasy of rare power and originality It seems that people have always known what ‘bad’ writing is, and yet nothing is done to teach ‘good’ writing. to avoid: nominalisations, glue words, the passive voice, legal prepositional phrases, legalese, and bad sentence technique. When I read his explanations, I can see a lot of parallels between what he said then and what I teach now, i.e. dying metaphors, (please note my metaphor at the beginning of this piece!).George Orwell said that English can suffer from: In the article he took 5 examples and broke them down regarding their plain English errors and he came up with the following issues. You can find these 6 rules discussed here: įor me, I found his analysis of language examples extremely interesting. In that article he sets out 6 rules for authors to follow to improve their use of English and make it much more communicable. This article is called ‘Politics and the English Language’. It therefore might come as a surprise to learn that George Orwell wrote a landmark short article in 1946 attacking what he believed to be the terrible use of English at the time. Now, plain English is mandatory as a result of government legislation or guidelines, private sector demand (particularly in the legal sector), and because ‘time is money’ – information has to communicated quickly, and accurately. It’s really only in the last 30 years that the plain English ball has really started to roll. If you think plain English is a modern-day invention, I suppose you could be forgiven. He won only four times in his lifetime at Dionysian theatre festivities, which were held every spring and once posthumously (for a group of plays including The Bacchae and Iphigenia in Aulis). Ninety-two tragedies, out of which only nineteen have survived, and a satyr play have been attributed to his name. He was a well-educated man at the time and many chronicles indicate that he was in possession of a personal library. The thing that started as mild, pleasurable and loving turned into brutality.Įuripides was born on the island of Salamis, near Athens, most probably in 485 BC. But then, only a few years later, there was a war in Vietnam, murder of Sharon Tate Polanski and events in Manson’s house. During rehearsals we talked about the 60’s, about how everything was great – there was free love, sex, Woodstock, flower power, music, everything that was out of ordinary, very strict society. I don’t expect the modern audience anywhere, be it in Stockholm, Berlin or Belgrade, to know the whole Greek mythology, therefore the play is based neither on mythical nor on historic point of view. Comical and funny parts exist only to make the tragedy even more severe at the end. The “Bacchae” have that Shakespearean moment – there is no tragedy without a comedy. Talking about common opinion that Greek drama is something boring and static, the director is representative of future audience during rehearsals and I don’t accept to be bored while I work. She would do anything to preserve her new life, but with the creatures determined to exact vengeance on those who’ve hurt her, no one is safe-not the family Xochi’s chosen, nor the one she left behind. Seventeen-year-old Xochi is alone in San Francisco, running from her painful past: the mother who abandoned her, the man who betrayed her. Michelle Ruiz Keil’s YA fantasy debut about love, found family, and healing is an ode to post-punk San Francisco through the eyes of a Mexican-American girl. In another scene he contemplates how he could drug the girls in his village ( who are technically under his control) to ensure that they would have sex with him. For instance there is one scene where the main character remarks on how great a women breasts are, right after he brutally murdered her. Not the good kind of perverted either (ie:kinky) just downright F'ed up. Perverted, because of a whole host of reasons. To put it simply, where do I even start? The misogynistic comments alone are tolerable (due mainly to their irregularity) and ranged from really really messed up to downright perverted. The author however menages to ruin even this careful equilibrium by writing numerous chapters that are so bad their almost unreadable. Reliant upon common literary mechanics and world building to make up for its poor character work. As many of the reviews will tell you, it's more of a guilty pleasure than anything else. (just to warn you this is NOT a short review) This book isn't a "good" book and it definitely, isn't a great book. The star even said her dream job is to have a “corner office” on the Disney studio lot when she appeared on Bruce Bozzi’s “Table for Two” podcast in 2022. “I actually need to text my sister about that,” she added. Like, I will be pre-buying tickets to ‘The Little Mermaid.’” She went on to share that when she was growing up, “it was a great time for Disney animation - ‘The Little Mermaid’ and ‘Aladdin’ and ‘Lion King’ with the incredible soundtrack. “We had annual passes to Disney World, and I have a real passion for the Disney parks,” Johansson said, adding that the obsession with Disney began when her family lived in Florida for two years when she was younger. Johansson shed some light on her level of Disney devoutness in a new Variety interview published on Tuesday, where it was revealed that the actor still visits Disney World at least 10 times a year and was described as somebody who “geeks out” when speaking about Disney movies. (A Disney adult can be defined in many ways depending on one’s level of fandom, but the term tends to refer to a grown person that is a dedicated Disney fan.) Scarlett Johansson may have sued Disney in 2021 for breach of contract, but the “Black Widow” star still is – and always has been – a full-fledged Disney adult. “When I was a kid I used to read all these media sites like the one I just posted, Metal Injection. Radke also added the following in response to a Metal Injection story about the cancellations: I love you guys, I promise you I’ll come back very soon, promise. You brought your kids and stuff like that. So I got to take care of my voice, and I love you guys. I’m not sick, I don’t have – it’s just the cold air in one of these venues, there’s no moisture.
